75 Hour advanced YOGA for Cancer course

Oncology Yoga Teacher Training

Most yoga teacher trainings don’t cover cancer. Yours probably didn’t — and that gap matters. When a cancer patient or survivor walks into your class, or a hospital asks if you’re qualified, you need more than compassion.

You need clinical knowledge, practical tools, and the ability to make yoga safe — and effective — for people whose lives depend on getting it right.

75 HOur Certificate Program

Oncology Yoga Teacher Training

The yoga4cancer Certificate Program is the most comprehensive oncology yoga teacher training available. Developed by Tari Prinster — cancer survivor, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT, and author of “Yoga for Cancer” — it has trained more than 3,000 professionals now teaching in hospitals, cancer centers, studios, and online settings worldwide.

This is a 75-hour advanced training built on evidence from oncology, exercise science, physiology, and trauma-informed care. It prepares you to work safely and effectively with cancer patients and survivors at any stage of treatment or recovery — regardless of your yoga background or style.

Designed for Professionals.

This training is designed for certified yoga teachers and yoga therapists with a minimum 200-hour foundational training who want to expand their scope into oncology yoga. All styles and lineages are welcome.

Participants should be comfortable with technology, self-paced learning, and taking personal responsibility for self-study online format.

The program is delivered in English. However, many international students have successfully used translation tools like Google Translate to support their learning in other languages.

You do not need prior experience with cancer patients. You do need to be ready to engage seriously with the science.

Recommended by Oncologists.

Leading medical organizations — including the American Institute for Cancer Research, the American Cancer Society, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services — recommend at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity and two days of strength training to support cancer recovery and reduce recurrence risk. Yoga meets both.

Oncologists now routinely refer patients to yoga as part of their care plans. When they do, they need to know the teacher on the other end is qualified.

Not all yoga is safe or appropriate for cancer survivors. Our Certificate Program prepares you with the clinical knowledge, research foundation, and practical tools to be the professional oncologists trust — and survivors need.

research Based Oncology YOga Course

What You'll Learn

The curriculum builds directly on your existing yoga foundation and goes where standard training doesn’t:

Cancer biology, treatment types, and the short- and long-term side effects that affect yoga practice
Safe and contraindicated poses — what to teach, what to modify, and what to avoid entirely
How to sequence for specific treatment phases, fatigue levels, and physical limitations
Lymphatic function and why breath-led movement is clinically relevant — not just philosophical
Trauma-informed teaching in an oncology context
How to communicate with survivors, caregivers, and healthcare providers
Evidence literacy — reading and applying research rather than relying on general yoga claims
Professional ethics and scope of practice for oncology yoga

The program includes a 330+ page manual — developed from two decades of y4c clinical experience, current research, and input from oncology experts at institutions including the American Cancer Society, CDC, and National Cancer Institute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do yoga teachers need special training to work with cancer patients and survivors?

Yes — and the risks are real without it. Standard 200-hour yoga teacher training doesn’t cover cancer biology, treatment mechanisms, or the long-term side effects that affect survivors for years after treatment ends. It also doesn’t prepare teachers for the psychological dimension: the anxiety of a life-threatening diagnosis, the fear of reinjury, or the complex emotional landscape survivors carry into class.

Compassion matters, but it doesn’t prevent a fracture from an unsafe forward bend, or a lymphedema flare triggered by an uninformed assist. Oncology yoga requires specific, evidence-based knowledge about what to teach, what to modify, and what to avoid entirely — and that knowledge isn’t part of a general yoga training.

Is this program recognized by hospitals and cancer centers?

Yes. y4c certification is required or preferred by hospitals, cancer centers, and integrative oncology programs worldwide. More than 3,000 graduates are currently working in clinical settings including hospitals, cancer centers, and VA facilities. If you’re seeking a role in a healthcare institution — or want to be able to say yes when one asks — this certification is the credential to hold.

What's the difference between oncology yoga and regular yoga?

Oncology yoga is evidence-informed yoga practice adapted specifically for people affected by cancer — whether in active treatment, post-treatment recovery, or long-term survivorship. It prioritizes physical safety for a population with elevated risks: bone loss from chemotherapy, peripheral neuropathy affecting balance, compromised immune function, post-surgical limitations, and lymphedema risk, among others.

It also accounts for the psychological and emotional weight of cancer — trauma, fear, grief, and the disruption of body image and identity — in ways that general yoga training doesn’t address. Yoga that is appropriate for a general population is not automatically safe or appropriate for a cancer survivor. Oncology yoga teachers know the difference.

What does the y4c program cover that my 200-hour training didn't?

In short: the science of cancer, the clinical context of survivorship, and the specific knowledge required to teach this population safely. Your foundational training gave you yoga — this program gives you oncology.

Specifically, you’ll study cancer biology and how different cancers and treatments affect the body; the short- and long-term side effects that change what’s safe in a yoga practice; contraindicated poses and how to modify common sequences; lymphatic function and why breath-led movement matters clinically; trauma-informed teaching in an oncology context; how to read and apply research; and professional ethics and scope of practice for oncology yoga.

Your 200-hour training is the prerequisite. This program is the specialization.

How long does the program take to complete?

The recommended pace is 2–4 months, which most students find manageable alongside a full teaching schedule. The program is fully self-paced — there are no required live events or weekly deadlines. You have 12 months of access from enrollment to complete the coursework and submit your practicum.

The program includes 120 individual lessons across 75 hours of instruction. Most students plan on 5–8 hours per week at the recommended pace. If you need to move faster or slower, you can — the structure supports both.

Can I earn CEU credits through this program?

Yes. The program provides 75 hours of continuing education credits with both Yoga Alliance (YACEP) and the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). You can apply those credits toward renewal requirements with either organization.

If you hold credentials with both, you earn 75 CEU hours with each — the program satisfies both requirements simultaneously.

What happens after I complete the program?

Upon successful completion, you receive y4c certification and are listed in the yoga4cancer certified teacher directory — the largest oncology yoga professional directory in the world, used by cancer patients, oncologists, and institutions to find qualified practitioners.

You also join a global community of 3,000+ certified oncology yoga professionals with access to ongoing community events, continuing education, and resources to support your clinical practice. More than 87% of graduates report actively using their certification — in studios, hospitals, cancer centers, VA facilities, private practice, and online.

I'm a cancer survivor. Is this the right time to enroll?

This is a question worth sitting with carefully. The program is designed to train professionals to support others — it is not a survivorship support program or a personal recovery tool. The content is intensive and often emotionally demanding: you’ll study treatment side effects, disease progression, and survivorship in clinical detail.

Many y4c teachers are survivors themselves, and that experience is genuinely valuable in this work. But the program asks you to hold professional boundaries and stay in the role of learner-becoming-teacher throughout. If you’re in active treatment or early recovery, we generally recommend waiting until you have some stability — physically and emotionally — before enrolling. You’ll get more from the program, and you’ll be better prepared to use it.

If you have questions about your specific situation, reach out before registering. We’re glad to talk it through. Contact
