Scar tissue from mastectomy, lumpectomy, or lymph node surgery can tighten and restrict movement as it heals, sometimes long after the incision itself has closed. The Dirty T-Shirt pose is a foundational movement in the yoga4cancer method. It gently and safely moves the tissue around the chest, underarm, and shoulder, supporting scar tissue mobility while helping restore the everyday reaching and overhead movement that surgery can limit.
Benefits of the Dirty T-Shirt pose
- ✔ Gently mobilizes scar tissue around the chest, underarm, and shoulder
- ✔ Restores overhead reach for everyday tasks like dressing and washing your hair
- ✔ Improves shoulder and arm range of motion after surgery
- ✔ Brings movement to the underarm area affected by lymph node surgery
- ✔ Safe and accessible during and after treatment
- ✔ No equipment needed
How to practice Dirty T-Shirt
Sit comfortably on a chair or on the floor with your spine tall and your palms resting on your thighs.
- Inhale: Lift your arms to cactus.
- Exhale: Fold your left arm over your right, giving yourself a hug.
- Inhale: Begin to lift your elbows higher. As if taking off a T-shirt, slide your fingers up your arms as you reach toward the ceiling. Expand your chest.
- Exhale: Lower your palms to your thighs.
Repeat, this time folding your right arm over your left. Then repeat the whole sequence six times, alternating which arm is on top.
Modifications after breast surgery
Removing the imaginary T-shirt may be difficult while you’re recovering from surgery. If so, skip that movement and return to Cactus Arms instead. Only lift your arms as high as feels comfortable. Range of motion often comes back gradually, and forcing it doesn’t speed things up.
Stop and contact your care team if you notice pain at the incision, or swelling, heaviness, or tightness in your arm.
Why scar tissue needs movement
As surgical incisions heal, the body lays down new tissue that is less flexible than the tissue around it. Without regular movement, it can tighten and pull on the chest, underarm, and shoulder, limiting how far you can reach. Gentle, repeated movement like Dirty T-Shirt helps keep that tissue mobile as it heals.
