Mentor Groups and Interaction
In 20 years of offering Oncology Yoga trainings, we have used various learning methods including group & mentor interaction to achieve maximum comprehension. Our current program and approach reflects the best of our experience.
A few points for consideration:
- There are 6 hours of breakout sessions with your mentor and fellow trainees. We encourage you to maximize these opportunities by being up to date on material and with any questions.
- We recognized that everyone learns differently. Some people thrive and require group interaction whilst others feel more comfortable working alone. We have built opportunities to support all types of learners.
- Most mentor sessions and breakouts are conducted later in the program on purpose. We have found that discussions or questions in earlier modules are similar as the program is designed to bring up certain questions or concepts. So, in the beginning, we have fewer individual breakout groups for efficiency and consistency of the delivery. For example, we will address common questions as a program-wide discussion – not via breakout groups – to ensure everyone gets the same answer. But, as the program proceeds and your understanding deepens, there are more breakout groups to support your individual learning experience.
- The quality of your group is inherently based on what each of you is putting into the program. If you are behind in the material, elements will be confusing and assignments challenging. Keeping to the schedule is recommended.
- Each trainee has one private 60 minute session with your mentor. That is schedule in conjunction with the practicum review. These session is also an excellent time to ask any other looming questions. More details on this session will be provided in Module #6.
- Asking questions to your mentor. Beyond the breakout sessions, we ask for people to direct all questions to y4c Central Team. This is because often, we have the answer OR they are common questions that will be reviewed in the upcoming content. Of course, there are exceptions and we will connect you and your mentor directly. Regardless, please follow the process as we provide in the upcoming topic – ‘Getting Support‘.
