Choose the right class for a cancer patient and survivor
There are hundreds of types of yoga offered worldwide. Each with a different approach, focus, lineage and certification process. Exploring these various types can be exciting and rewarding but, for cancer patients and survivors, most lineages are not aware nor trained on how to best support the unique physical, mental and emotional side effects of cancer & its treatments.
Guidance for choosing the right class:
- Look for an Oncology Yoga or a yoga for cancer survivor class. These are becoming more popular and accessible. Ask for hospital or cancer center referrals. Use our directory to locate a teacher or class near you or with the language skills you need.
- If on Oncology Yoga class exists, select a ‘gentle vinyasa’ or slow movement class. This will help achieve the specific goals and needs of a cancer whilst reducing any risk.
- Require advanced training in Oncology Yoga. Ask the teacher or provider for their experience and understanding of working with cancer patients and survivors.
- Be mindful of ‘levels’. If you are in active treatment, its unlikely that an advanced class would be the best option.
